In a proactive effort to reduce illegal fireworks use and promote public safety, the Department of Law Enforcement (DLE), in partnership with county agencies, held a Fireworks Buyback Event across the state. Residents were given the opportunity to turn in unwanted or illegal fireworks in exchange for grocery store gift cards—no questions asked and no identification required. The initiative aimed to protect communities, reduce fire hazards, and support safer holiday celebrations throughout Hawaiʻi.

This initiative provides residents a direct way to report theft, vandalism, and other farm-related crimes that threaten Hawaiʻi’s agricultural community. Tipsters can call 808-723-3600 to share information anonymously and help safeguard local food systems.

In an effort to enhance community safety and reduce the risk of gun violence, the Department of Law Enforcement (DLE), in partnership with the Maui Police Department and other agencies, hosted a successful Gun Buyback Event in Kahului. Held at the Maui County Service Center, the event allowed residents to anonymously turn in unwanted or illegal firearms in exchange for Foodland gift cards—helping to remove dangerous weapons from homes and neighborhoods.

Today’s event “SAY HI” program was very successful. We were joined by HPD’s District 3 command, patrol and Community Policing, Narcotics K9, SSD K9 and Solo Bikes. We had approximately 150 students ranging from kindergarten to 2nd grade. This was our 5th year and it was awesome and rewarding to interact with the children and teaching staff and also with fellow law enforcement officers. We hope that our continued presence throughout the schools and communities, educating the public, will have a long lasting impression.

Again, we have risen to the occasion and provided the community with information and lots of visual aids to educated them as to what we do for them and how we help keep Hawaii safe and happy!
